Life, Love & Literature

Just another Home Education blog

Educational Philosopy

I can’t remember how and why we made the decision to home educate the boys. Like all major things in our life we simply went with the flow and the flow led us to the nearest book shop opposed to the school gate.

Like the majority of home educators we don’t subscribe to one particular educational theory.

In some ways I could define us as child-led, but for us I take this as led by being led by what the child needs.  Which isn’t always the same as what they want.  Jack in particular needs structure, without it he becomes very highly strung and lacks the ability to concentrate and focus even on the things he enjoyed.  We try and follow their interests and allow scope for flexibility in our schedule.

The Educational Theory I suppose we are closest to is Charlotte Mason.  The house is filled with books and I try and find time most days to read with the boys.

Why learning through life?

The world is a fascinating place and children have so much natural curiosity. We believe the best way to learn is to experience.

Why learning through love?

We love having our boys around, helping them develop and enjoy sharing their childhood. They are thriving in an environment where the education is tailored individually to them, where they can develop their independence at a pace which suits them.

Why learning through literature?
Even if life and love let you down you can still retreat under the duvet with a book. And in a book there are lots of new lives to explore and learn from and many new friends to love.
