Trojan Horse

We have a brilliant set of books called Art from the Past  that Sam spends a lot of time browsing.  For the last 3 years or so I’ve been promising him a Trojan Horse.  So using the 1000 coffee stirrers I was sent in the run up to Christmas, I give you…

It even holds soldiers

Catching Up

Long time since I’ve posted properly but we’ve been busy catching up with friends. Including spending some lovely days with Jack’s oldest friend and her family who emigrated to the US four years ago but have been home for the summer.

We’ve been pushing on with Jack’s workbooks in an attempt to finish off all the current ones before holiday, ready to start anew when we get back in Sep.  We had fun looking at electricity.

Using static electricity to make a tissue paper man stand up

making and testing circuits

Sam’s been working more on his Egyptian project.

Making an Egyptian collar

And we’ve been buying too many books :-)

Books, Glorious Books

All Change!

Has anyone else had problems with Blogger lately? I haven’t been able to log in for a week — grr!
Normal routines seem to have pretty much gone to pot over the last couple of weeks. Grandpa has been to stay and Pete had a weekend away. Jack is going through one of those spells when he has a lot of spark about him and we’re working more or less autonomously.
We’ve been playing lots of table tennis.
Been out and about running errands. I’ve had about 1/2 my hair chopped off and have new glasses on order.
There has been ice creams.

Buying of ‘tat’ from charity shops (Jack is a Weeping Angel from Doctor Who).
Lots of time in libraries. Friday they spent an hour and a half in the local one reading and colouring while I changed the wall display and Weds we spent an hour in the Discovery Centre in Gosport as it has a much better non-fic range collecting books on anything that caught our fancy.
We’ve been experimenting with plants.
Beanstalks again.

Which have sprouted already. When they are a bit bigger we will turn one upside down to see what happens.

And cress. We’re testing what plants need to grow so have deprived some of light/heat/water etc.
We’ve been making things with salt dough.
2 egyptian plagues and cartouches waiting to be painted.

Baked cakes. Lemon and Strawberry sherbet cupcakes to be exact.
Oh and we got a new piano!
They were so excited I got a rousing rendition of Ode to Joy, complete with random german sounding words, at 8.30 this morning while it was still in the box :)

Filling in the gaps

Aside from Camping most of what we have been doing since Easter is standard run of the mill work and play. We’ve had usual home ed group, drama, cubs and rainbows (where boys get a couple of hours playing with the other guider’s children).

While Jack was on camp I got out the electricity set to keep Sam entertained.
And we made a helicopter. The kit has stayed out for most of the week and we’ve had some fun playing with it.
Jack has carried on with his Maths and History courses and started Book 2 of the Science and English books.
The first chapter of English looked at Snow White and a factual piece based on snow. As
well as comprehension and grammar exercises he has done a number of creative writing exercises inspired by the texts, such as this acrostic poem.
Sam has begun working through Schofield and Simms Mental Arithmetic book alongside the Key Maths.
English, and Sam is working through his reading scheme well. When we are out and about he is starting to sound out street signs and words he sees to himself. Reading is coming on in leaps and bounds.
Also been continuing with worksheets from his Developing Literacy books

mixed up with some Schofield and Simms Writing and Comprehension practice.

We are still looking at Ancient Egypt.
We’ve been reading about food.

Watching dvds about Tutenkhamen, Cleopatra and Ramses the Great.

Playing games.
Decorating masks (Baker Ross)

and sarcophagi (Baker Ross again)

and making amulets (charity shop about 3 years ago)

Which I accidentally burnt (they were red, yellow and blue when they went in)

The boys have both had little fevery bugs which luckily we 24 hour things, so there was cuddling …

…and reading. Since we went to watch Midsummer Night’s Dream Jack has got in to reading the Shakespeare stories.

Poetry has always been a favourite.

We’ve read about and discussed voting systems, and looked through all the election leaflets before going to vote.

We’ve built and painted Airfix planes. Still have cockpits and transfers to add.

Jack’s new book came, so he was happy.

We had a trip to Southampton where I cheered up a poorly Sam (he was fine when we left the house …) with a trip to the Build a Bear Factory.

Bouncing Back

After a couple of days of recovering strength, which involved lots of playing with a bingo game that came free from the local kebab shop,
And setting up wars and battles with Airfix soldiers,
we are getting back into the swing of ‘work’.
Jack finished off his English and Science books and did some Maths.
Sam did some writing, reading and comprehension, and some maths.
Then we read this

And made some Egyptian God puppets.

Then Jack went out to play with friends and Sam and I watched The History of Celtic Britain and played Animal Jam on the National Geographic website (although I did have to go and find Jack to make it work :-) )
We’ve been getting in the Easter spirit and making baskets and nests,
and decorating eggs.

Decorating, Maths, Making Friends and Sickness…

…Just in case anyone is wondering where we have gone that pretty much sums it up.

Have been moving the boys into separate rooms, which has taken a long time and is still not finished as mattresses and wardrobes haven’t arrived.
Spending so much time decorating put me behind on my OU maths course so spent a week working on that at any spare moment.
The sun has come out and the boys have made friends with the kids in the cul-de-sac opposite (about 4 or 5 families have kids of a similar age). Jack especially has spent a lot of time down there playing football, riding go carts and making dens. Bit unnerving letting them go as I can’t see what they get up too most of the time but they are growing up and when I think what I was like at that age (never in!) have to let them go. Plus there have been a few park trips to catch up with old HEing friends and meet new ones. As well as the usual routines of Rainbows, Cubs, Drama.
Then after a few weeks of respite, the colds, coughs, asthma and sickness bugs have taken hold again.
Education wise we have plodded on and made good progress.
Sam finished off his ‘years’ Heinemann Maths books.

We have the next years up ready to go but decided to have a change and do some Schofield and Simms Maths first.
We have carried on with ‘The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading’. Never saw myself being a reading scheme type, certainly wasn’t with Jack. But it is working well with Sam. He is starting to read aloud from books to himself and tell me ‘that says …’. But if you ask him he can’t read!

We have carried on with worksheets from these.
But over the last week, we’ve introduced these for a bit of variety.
Sam is enjoying the writing practice book.
We finished the Ancient Mesopotamia pocket from his Ancient Civilizations project,
and started Ancient Egypt. We are going to have to come up with our own bits for this I think as being a particular interest of Sam’s he knows way more than the information in the unit.
Jack has done lots of piano practice and is coming on well.
We started this Maths book a few weeks ago (our 3rd KS2 level course) really as a confidence boost as there is nothing in it we haven’t covered and he is cracking through it at a fast pace.
These are the books we have been using for English and Science. We started the course a year later than he would have started in school and have been going through them at a faster pace. Now he is on the last chapter of both.
History and Jack is finishing off looking at Ancient Greece with a look at Alexander the Great. Who, thanks to Sam, he is very familiar with (the Usborne Famous Lives book about Alexander has elbowed out Julius Caesar as Sam’s favourite book I think).

A Catch Up in Pictures

Off out so haven’t much time to post now so will try and come back later.

But to fill in some of the blanks.
Last week sort of fizzled out as boys were not at all well, lots of sleeping, reading and TV watching.
Sam found some watercolour paints, so they surfaced long enough to paint me some lovely pictures.
Spring was on Sam’s mind.
While it seems it hasn’t quite filtered through to Jack yet.
Sam practised writing like a Viking with the help of a Horrible Histories book.
Then we got out some clay and Sam made a stone tablet. It says Nebuchadnezzar, King of Persia in Sumarian (or possibly Assyrian).

Then made a cylindrical seal based on ones found in Ancient Mesopotamia. It’s a toilet roll covered in clay. Haven’t tested it yet.

And finally it’s an Assyrian bull!

This week they are still coughy and coldy but it was back to work.
Jack has started looking at Lights and Shadows so we made and looked at a eye kid from National Geographic.

Sam carried on with some of his Mesopotamian history pocket.

The sun was out so the garden beckoned.

Yesterday was home ed group and they filled pancakes and played. I forgot camera.
Then cubs and more pancakes.
Picture Jack drew at Cubs, blindfolded!

Hardgoing

esterday was one of those days where it all seems a struggle. Hard to identify why as on the face of it we achieved a lot. Boys were constantly nitpicking at one another, everything seemed to take longer than it should and it took at least 3 times of asking and quite often a raised voice for them to do anything I asked of them. And we all just seem to be irritating each other.

One of those days where living in the close relationships that results from home ed is a burden rather than a gift.
Anyway, we did Maths and English.
Sam did some more of his Ancient Civilizations project. Completing the first pocket

by adding a timeline.
And starting the second; making puppets,
colouring a book,
and making a pop-up card of a ziggurat
Jack moved on from rocks to magnets. He started by testing things around the house,
including his brother!
He did a couple of exercises in the book and then designed a machine for testing and recycling cans.
Sam joined in with a machine for making coffee.
At lunch Sam and I watched The History of Ancient Britain, which we really enjoyed. Sam has odd taste in TV for a 5yo.
Afternoon and Jack did some activities from his geography and ict books which we have not had out for a long time.
Sam did some crafts, inc potato printing hearts and lots involving gold glitter for our Jack and the Beanstalk theme.
Then there was time to construct ‘something’ in the back garden.
before they gave up and came in to tidy up. Or in other words potter around arguing with one another and ignoring me.
Oh well hopefully today is another day although signs are not good…
