Skatepark

Needed a bit of an airing today as thanks to colds/coughs we’ve not left home much lately.
So we headed up and pottered down to the local skatepark.

Jack is getting more adventurous (and falling over more!)

Sam was quite excited about the half a dead fish we found on the beach! He told the library assistant VERY loudly about it, and his theory of a shark eating the other half!

It’s the small things…

Today was one of those days where all seems well with the world.

We waved off Grandpa Bob this morning, than sat down to work.

Sam’s reading is coming on in leaps and bounds and in spite of being introduced to a new concept in maths he was completely unfazed and rushed through it.

Jack also worked incredibly quickly and efficiently, maths was no problem and then he wrote a diary entry pretending he was a member of a British tribe in Roman Britain when news of Boudicca’s rebellion hit.

March 13th

I am so confused. I don’t know what to do. Oh right you don’t know about it sorry.

I went out to the market today to get some barley and wheat. I heard rumours that Boudicca was rebelling against the Romans from the market stall holder.

On one hand I want the Celts and Gauls to be free, but on the other hand, are the Romans that bad? They have let us become Roman citizens and have improved the drainage and our buildings.

I know both sides are going to call me up to fight in there army. I don’t know what to do.

Do I support Boudicca and freedom or do I support Caesar and civilisation? I don’t know?

If I support the Celts and they win my father will lose his job. I must fight for the Roman empire.

Sam made a Greek theatre mask

After piano practice it was Latin and we were finishing off the first chapter of Minimus so they made Latin birthday cards

and then they worked together to make some vocabulary cards. It is very seldom that I set them academic tasks to do together as Jack is not surprisingly far in advance.  But Latin is something that they have started together and Sam is holding his own which is nice to see.

After that we did a short Latin vocab test, read a couple of chapters of Goodnight Mr Tom and had some lunch.

After lunch Lisa kindly picked us up and we went around to play and drink tea for the afternoon.

Afterwards we decided to make the most of the weather before the Indian summer fades (which I think it already has, the wind has got up and it was raining when I brought the washing in), so we went straight to the beach.

Where there was more paddling (this time in swimming shorts not fully dressed!)…

…some swimming…

…snuggling up for warmth…

…more funny hair dos…

…and tossing of pebbles.

We rounded off with a healthy tea of chips and ice cream while we watched the sunset, before coming home and cuddling up on the settee to watch Planet Dinosaur.

What happened to Autumn?

I love Autumn; crisp fresh air, slight nip in the air, swapping my sandals for Uggs, the wonderful colours, no hayfever, being able to sleep…

I do not  like stifling heat and hayfever in October!

But, even I will admit playing in the sea at 5pm on the second day of October is an unexpected treat

At the sea with Grandpa Bob

Dipping in a toe…

…and a heel…

…this is quite fun…

SPLASH!

And to end, a funny hairdo!

Home Sweet Home

We are just back from a week visiting my Dad in N. Wales.

Having arrived at tea time on Thursday, we heading to the beach for the evening to blow away the cobwebs of 6 hours travelling.
We had an unsuccessful game of frisbee. It was too windy! Lots of chasing rolling frisbees for long distances and boomerang style throws.

Jack wrote messages in the sand.
And Sam dug.
Then we watched the sun set from the park.

Friday was spent catching up, food shopping and running errands.
On Saturday my oldest friend was getting married. Don’t they scrub up well!
‘I’m singing in the rain’

After the ceremony, Sam and Dad went home and Jack and I went to the reception. Where I caught up with old friends, Jack made new ones and then we spend a long time ‘on Rhys watch’ playing with my friends little boy. He’s a right cutie, but he was 3 last week and I forgot how tiring they are at that age.
Sunday, we went to Chester with my sister and gorgeous 14yo niece. Went around some shops, had lunch at Pizza Hut and visited some ‘roman stuff’.
Not immediately obvious from the photo but here’s the amphitheatre.

And a roman villa.

Monday we were back at the beach.
Getting buried.

Playing in the sea.

Building sandcastles.

And back in the sea.
Tuesday and back to the beach — although in jumpers!
I built a sandcastle

and we had fun watching it get knocked down.
Weds, we went to Anglesey. I used to have my family holiday there every year, but it is 15 years since I was last there. A touch depressing thought.
We went to Beaumaris Castle. Biggest of the castles Edward I had built in N. Wales and by far more impressive than any of our local castles. I loved going as a girl and the boys were just as taken with it.
There were baby ducks on the moat…

…and a cygnet.

Crossing the drawbridge

The castle is an impressive structure looking out over the Menai Strait to Snowdonia on the mainland.
There was lots of pretending to be archers…
climbing up broken down walls…
…and pulling silly faces.

You can walk around the outer walls. When I was little they didn’t have the hand rails and I remember being about 7 and freezing half way across. My Dad had to climb through and carry me down ;)

You can still climb all of the towers,

and explore the inner rooms.

Thursday was spent catching up with old friends and playing in my Dad’s garden before travelling back on Friday.

A lovely trip. But nice to be home, we all missed Pete.

A ‘breezy’ walk

After a day inside we nipped out for an evening walk to get some fresh air. It was very, very fresh!

Isle of Wight

Had a lovely fortnights holiday on the Isle of Wight.

As much time as possible was spent on the beach.
We also managed a trip to Blackgang Chine where we watched some of Jack’s childhood peel away as he realised it wasn’t the magical paradise he remembered but was really quite gimicky and shoddy. Still had fun climbing on the dinosaurs and in the Wild west town.
Sam and I also made a trip to Dinosaur Isle, where Sam loved digging in the sand until he spotted a model
dinosaur above his head.
